River-ness

Solo exhibition at Hay Studio, Cornwall September 2017

This exhibition of paintings was curated by Sue Hay and represents a year-long study of the River Camel.

Located close to Hay Studio, and my home in Withiel, the River Camel is the natural heart of the local community and a place for quiet strolls, dog walks, bike rides, horse treks and summer picnics. Over a 12 month period I studied the river and it’s banks, taking photographs and painting in the landscape, captivated by the ever-changing colours, sights and sounds of this extraordinarily rich and varied habitat.

‘River-ness’ describes Janet Shearer’s fascination with water and her aim to capture the very essence of the river’s movement, reflections, ripples, shadows and constantly shifting layers of light.

Living so close to this particular stretch of the River Camel has given Janet the opportunity to study the ‘River-ness’ of her subject daily and she has immersed herself - concentrating on the details, colours and transparency of the watery depths.

This new collection of paintings explores the space and changing nature of the river and shoreline, in all seasons.
